Protection denied, abuse condoned: women on Nauru at risk

This report highlights the sexual assault and abuse of women refugees living in Australia's regional processing centres in Nauru. In 2013, the Australian government re-opened the Nauru detention centres as part of a policy in which all asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat would be transferred to Nauru and Manus Island for processing. However, since then, there have been growing concerns over the violence and fear experienced by women moved to Nauru, with local police and security contractors failing to provide protection or redress. This report draws together the evidence from multiple reports on the resettlement policy as well as the stories of women themselves, and presents recommendations for the Australian government.
